Experience Bavaria / Bohemia
Experience the 'real' Bavarian & Bohemia in Bayerisch Eisenstein
We have put together a list of activities which can be enjoyed in and around Bayerisch Eisenstein.
All of these activities take place in the village or close by.
Most of these activities are traditional to the area and taking part helps to keep these traditions alive.
Some of the activities are only available on certain days of the week. All of them have to booked in advance and are subject to availability.
1. Food & Drink
- Learn to cook a real Bavarian meal in the comfort of your own apartment with Ulrike, Magda or Martin.
- Learn how Bavarian and Czech beer is brewed in Zwiesel or Zelezna Ruda
2. Glass
- Learn the skill of Hinterglasmalerei (Reverse glass painting), a traditional art in the Bavarian Forest. (This has to be spread over 3 days to allow each coat of paint to dry - sessions are usually arranged at the beginning of the day or late afternoon in order to allow time for other activities).
- Try out glass fusion
- Make your own piece of glass at the village demonstration glassworks. Thursdays - Sundays.
3. Walking in the Forest and the Area
- Experience the ancient Bavarian Forest on a guided walk with Andreas or Ulrike on unmarked paths near the village.
- Take one of our many recommended walks in the forest, self-guided, including 9 walks to places for lunch and 2 to places for coffee and cakes, buggy friendly walks, winter walks, hikes, city walks etc.
4. History
- Learn about the history of Bayerisch Eisenstein on a walk around the village with Martin, Tuesdays 10.30am, other days/times by arrangement.
- Learn about the history of the border in the 20th century as it affected one small Bavarian village, from Margaret’s book and photo exhibition in the Forsthaus.
- Visit the Patton Museum at Plzen, Hartmanice Mountain Synagogue, Rozvadov border museum, the old look out tower at Polednik, the Flossenbuerg concentration camp site and take the walk across the border in Czech Republic depicting the history of the 2nd World War.
5. Forest Activities
- Try out some typical forest activities such as summer tobogganing, archery, hire wire parks, shooting and canoeing (these activities are main located in places which can only be reached by car – please ask us)
6. Bavarian Cultural Events
- Come to our Sengzelten evenings and schnapps tastings, read our summer newsletter on the best local fests and events
